business. it will be dramatically reduced. >> reporter: supervisors john foust and jeff mckay were part of the unanimous county board this week asking congress to hurry up and resolve the impending sequestration. >> if you go make the kind of cuts that some are suggesting happen, then you're really hurting a lot of the small business and residences in fairfax county who rely on federal contracts for their livelihood and ultimately that trickles down and affects fairfax county. >> reporter: fairfax county pulled in $23 billion in federal contract money in 2009, more than any county in the entire nation and $3 billion more than washington, d.c. so what is it about fairfax county that makes it so attractive? dulles airport. the international airport provides easy access to washington on its highway. dulles airport also provides connections to both the national and international markets but if funding drops out, buildings will go empty and commercial property taxes which fuel the county's economy

media ads. one of the senate's most outspoken conservatives jim demint is stepping down. he's giving up his senate seat to run the conservative heritage foundation. deminute has been an influential member of the tea party movement. his announcement could have repercussions not only in the senate but in republican primaries across the country. egyptian president mohamed morsi is not backing down. demonstrators continue to protest his decision to declare his laws above judicial review. morsi addressed the nation thursday and refused to delay a referendum on the country's new constitution set for next week. the united states is closely monitoring the syrian army. defense secretary leon panetta says intelligence reports showed syrian military could be preparing chemical weapons to use against its own people. the united states has been reluctant to use military force to depose president assad and

is still trying to find a diplomatic resolution to the fighting. secretary of state hillary clinton met with her russian counterpart thursday to discuss the matter. russia remains one of syria's strongest allies. licenses for same-sex marriage are being issued in maryland now. just a few couples picked them up around the state but they have to wait till at least 12:01 on new year's day for the actual ceremony. karen and her partner of 29 years, this was a big milestone. >> so excited. i cannot believe this day is here. cannot believe it. been waiting for a long time. >> montgomery county's new marriage lrnlses will say party one and party two -- licenses will say party one and party two two. prince george's county's licenses won't be ready till next week. an aide at the maryland school for the deaf in columbia is accused of inappropriately and touching -- inappropriately touching and kissing three

students. the aide is in jail charged with three counts of alleged abuse. police are looking into the possibility there might be more victims. the hunt continues for a man who sexually assaulted a motel clerk at an econo lodge in woodbridge, virginia. the man telephoned the clerk posing as a guest locked out of a room. when the clerk arrived to help him, a masked man pulled a knife on her, forced her into an empty room and assaulted her. a man has been charged and -- arrested and charged with murdering a teen in maryland. we told you about the story yesterday. police believe the shooting is gang related. coming up on 4:35, here are some of the other things making news this morning. a tsunami warning has been issued in the pacific ocean after an earthquake in japan. 7.3 magnitude it was.

it was centered? the pacific ocean off japan's northeastern coast. this story is continuing to develop. we'll bring you more as soon as we get it. the death toll from a typhoon in the philippines is up to 425 people and 400 more are still listed as missing. most of the deaths are in the southern portion of the country where there is widespread flooding. some of the places where people thought they were safe actually became the deadliest, including two emergency shelters. it really is beginning to look a lot like christmas in the nation's capital. 7,000 people -- 17,000 people on the ellipse watched as the first family light the christmas tree. the blue spruce was transplanted on the ellipse in october. all of the trees on the eliption will be lit through -- ellipse will be lit every night

welcome back at 4:39. i'm olga breese in for howard this morning. doppler picking up on some moisture. we'll see some showers this morning. i expect the showers to continue. temperatures should make it into the middle range 50s and then we cool down nicely tonight with a warmer day tomorrow. in the district, all the potomac and anacostia crossings are incident free. there is construction, though, in place here on the inbound side of canal road as you exit for the key bridge. you'll have to turn all the way around to the left to get around it and it may cause a bit of a delay later in the morning. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 4:47. back to you guys. >> thanks, monika. coming up on 4:40, in time for the first your money segment this friday morning.

>> money time. good morning. we get a new reading on the job market. superstorm sandy may skew the numbers in today's november unemployment report. economists believe the storm's disruption slashed job growth in half. they say it might take another month or two before wall street gets an accurate read on the labor market. most economists predict just 80,000 jobs were added in november and that the unemployment rate held steady at 7.9%. ahead of that report, the dow starts this morning at 13,074, added about 40 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was up by 15 and a half and the s&p 500 was up by 4 and a half. apple says the company will begin producing one of its existing line of mac computers in the united states. the company will spend $100 million to shift production from china. apple originally made its computers in the u.s. but began

outsourcing in the mid-1990's. t mobile will begin selling apple's iphone next year. it will become the last of the four largest carriers to offer the best selling device. analysts say adding the iphone may help t mobile lure more customers to long-term contracts and hold on to more subscribers. people are still loving the iphone, even with the dom nance of the samsung galaxy starting to take over. >> except mike. >> and derek, hello. >> who's learning. >> they're all good. >> somebody will have it under their tree i'm sure. two months after montgomery county repaired a pothole riddled street, a utility company announced plans to dig it up again. >> don't you hate that? 9news returns in two minutes with more on that story. plus, your weather first.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. it is 4:44 on friday. now it's a yellow alert day which means what? >> well, we have the yellow alert because that moisture is moving on in. it could affect the commute this morning for folks who are heading out a little bit later. right now, though, we're looking pretty good. our radar is only showing a few of those showers well off to the west but the moisture is coming in from the southwest and it will continue to stream in all day long. our current temperatures not so bad. we're on the cool side but you will need maybe those gloves

and perhaps not even that hat today because things will be a little bit milder after sunrise. into the 30s and 40s to start you out this hour. but satellite and radar shows just how much moisture is on the way. most of the storms will stay west of the divide. however, the moisture coming up from the south is going to continue to cross along i-95 and move up to the northeast into new england. it will be pretty steady stream into the afternoon. 9:00 hour, we're still in the 40s so, yes, chilly. you need the jacket or coat heading on out and perhaps the gloves but by noontime we'll start to inch up our temperatures. we'll hit the middle range 40s and maybe hit 55 degrees or so for our high later on this afternoon and plummet back down into the 40s for overnight lows tonight. the futurecast forecast model will show you most of the moisture does miss our area, however, some areas particularly north of the beltway could see some fairly steady streams of showers moving on through. by the 6:00 hour, most of us are dry on the evening commute

but we can't rule out some of that moisture streaming on through. overnight tonight, we're doing pretty well. clouds are going to stick around. that's going to hold our temperatures fairly moderate into the early morning hours of saturday, but on saturday as the southerly winds move on up and we become partly sunny on saturday, temperatures will take a leap and things will be quite nice to start you off on the weekend. for right now, though, highs will make it to the lower range to middle 50s in town. we should see about 53 at reagan national airport. a little cooler up to the north and west. only into the 40s from gaithersburg and out toward rockville. we will have the opportunity, though, again for those showers off and on. overnight tonight, not too bad. cloud cover keeps us in the 40s. we shouldn't see any of the 30s as we go into your saturday morning. we're keeping it yellow for today. green for saturday. but with the milder temperatures in the middle range 60s as we get into sunday. still code green and slightly cooler as the next system moves on through. but take a look at monday's forecast. looks like our temperatures could flirt with the upper 60s. monika? >> thank you so much, olga.

good morning, everybody. it's what we call friday morning light. that's a good thing, especially after everything we had to deal with yesterday morning and during the rush hour. today, not like that. 270 looks great as you come in from frederick to the point where the lanes divide and on the outer loop at the exit for northbound 270, that overturned pineapple truck has been cleared. took a long time to do that but it's all gone right now. let's take a live look outside and show you what it looks like if you're planning to head close by. no problems on the beltway at connecticut avenue coming around from 95 westbound on 495. let's go back over to the maps this time to southern maryland. route 4, route 5, 301, no problems into oxon hill. 295 has been taking a little bit after hit. everyone is taking it to the 11th street bridge because the westbound freeway has been shut down at the sousa bridge for a couple of weeks now that will be 18 to 20 months with reconstruction there. to the bound side of canal road -- to the inbound side of canal road, you have construction. it will slow you down a bit.

watch out for the workers there. speaking of work, if you are planning to use metro this weekend, you will want to know -- back to you guys. >> okay, all right. we have some problems on metro. we'll have more on that later on. it's on our website wusa9.com under traffic. this is something we've all griped about. i know you have been affected by this. residents on one street in montgomery county are wondering why $8 million was spent to repair the road only to have the utility company prepare to dig it back up just two months after the work was complete. >> we all said this when we were behind the wheel. this pavement is great. what do you do with the shovel? people along brisbane street in silver spring are fighting to keep this from happening. they've been able to at least delay the work. >> reporter: looks pretty good now. >> very nice and spoot as a baby's bottom -- smooth as a baby's bottom intlr before it was repaved.

>> i had to have my car realigned twice over the last two years because of all the potholes we were hitting. >> we had a hole down there that was 18 inches deep. >> reporter: so they love the improved street. happy neighbors. >> really a perfect state of pavement. >> reporter: now the freshly paved street has something fresher still. marks from a utility company that indicate the newly repaired brisbane is going to be torn up again, this time for work by the washington suburban sanitary commission. >> it's ridiculous. >> reporter: unhappy neighbors. >> well, what happened was, there's been a communication breakdown between wssc and the county's department of transportation. >> reporter: the wssc thought it could make some necessary repairs to underground pipes without digging a trench in the street but then the wssc decided? >> we needed to dig. >> reporter: important work. >> we literally want to keep sewage from flowing into their basements. >> reporter: new roads in montgomery county are supposed to be left alone. >> you don't cut, you don't do

anything to those roads for five years. >> reporter: the prospect of cutting brisbane? >> caused a lot of very unhappy people to call my office. >> reporter: so the county talked to the wssc. >> we're very sympathetic to that, so we're going to go back now and take another look and see if we can change and see if there's a way we can go some way. >> reporter: now the digging is on hold. you confident the street won't be dug up? >> i can't say that. >> reporter: the acting director for the county, the wssc is operating under a federal order to make the repairs and believe that the pipes under brisbane could be repaired without digging up the street. after the paving was double, a contractor informed the wssc that the pipes were different and that digging would be required. now the wssc is trying to find a way around that to do the mandated work and it's meeting with the county next week. gary nurenberg, 9news. >> fingers crossed for them because we all feel their pain. turning our attention now

to health news. women who eat a diet loaded with fruits and vegetables could reduce their risk of breast cancer. a new study finds micronutrients found in fruits and vegetables have cancer fighting properties. researchers say the micronutrients keep tumors from growing. researchers at the university of california berkley have pinpointed a gene that helps turn carbohydrates into fat. they found when the gene was disabled in mice, carbs did not turn into fat. doctors say this is a significant finding because it may lead to new treatments for obesity and diabetes. if you love football, channel 9 is where you need to be this weekend. right here on wusa. it all starts on saturday. army-navy game at 3:00. we'll have a complete wrapup at 7:00. game on. then this sunday you can watch the skins welcome the ravens to fed ex field. very important game. playoff implications there. it will be followed by a special game after that.

putle dear prize winner journalist george lardner reminded us that the skins fight song nearly didn't happen. in 1959 the men who aimed at bringing the dallas cowboys to dallas, the cowboys to dallas, bought the rights of hail to the redskins out from under the team. and he said he would only give the song back if redskins owner george preston marshall would lift his veto on n.f.l. expansion to dallas. thus the cowboys were born and they were in dallas and d.c. got the song back. lardner calls it basically legal extortion. >> yes, it was perfectly legal. >> reporter: it's just business. >> yes. they bought the rights. they had the rights. they threatened to gettage -- get an injunction if the redskins played that song again. >> imagine if it was not happening. rights to the song came back in 1959 and traded hands for

and the beltway. i take a look at 395 as well. much of the same to the 14th street bridge and into the downtown area. you want to know, though, this is a big weekend for work on metro transit. wheaton is one of five stations along metro's red line that will be closed this weekend. the tacoma, silver spring, forest glen and glenmont stations are the other four. buses will run between the fort totten and glenmont stations. shuttles will run between archives and water upon. there will not be green line service to l'enfant plaza. the yellow line will be closed for inspections at the bridge across the potomac river so in virginia, yellow line trains will follow the blue line tracks from the pentagon through eastern market. i'll be back with more traffic coming up at 5:01. back to you. >> if you missed any of that, again it's on our website at wusa9.com. pizza parodizo has a fun way for people to give this
